How to Get Canada Greener Homes Grant for Windows & Doors: Here's everything you need to know

What is Canada greener homes grant?

Recognizing residential homes contribute up to 18% of greenhouse emissions, the Government of Canada is taking proactive steps to enhance energy efficiency. The Canada Greener Homes Grant is a federal government initiative aimed at promoting energy efficiency and addressing climate change by providing financial assistance to homeowners in Canada. The grant offers various programs and rebates to encourage homeowners to make energy-efficient upgrades to their homes. One of the programs under this grant is a rebate of up to $5,000 for homeowners who retrofit their windows and sliding doors with high-performance, energy-efficient ones.

Who qualifies for the $5,000 grant?

The program is for all homeowners in Canada, provided they can show:

  • Valid proof of ownership of the residence

  • That the property is their primary residence

The grants are not available for previous installations. An old window's frame can be used to install a new window unit on, but replacements of only the glass, sash, or door without a frame are not acceptable. $250 maximum per rough opening with a $5,000 maximum.

Types of residences that are eligible:

  • Single and semi-detached houses

  • Rowhouses

  • Townhomes

  • Mobile homes on a permanent foundation

  • Permanently moored floating homes

  • The residential portions of mixed-use buildings

  • Small multi-unit residential buildings of up to three stories and a footprint no larger than 600 square meters.

Which windows and doors can I upgrade to?

· U-Factor of 1.22 W/m²K or less or

· Energy Rating ≥ 34

$125 for replacing your hinged doors, with or without sidelites or transoms ENERGY STAR certified models:

· U-Factor ≤ 1.22 W/m²K or

· Energy Rating ≥ 34

$250 for replacing your windows or sliding doors with ENERGY STAR-certified most efficient models:

· U-Factor of 1.05 W/m²K or less or

· Energy Rating ≥ 40

How does the process work?

Here are some key steps about the Canada Greener Homes Grant:

Step 1: Determine Your Eligibility

Step 2: Pre-Retrofit Evaluation

Evaluation An energy advisor from the organization you’ve selected will then come to your home at the scheduled time to do a mandatory pre-retrofit – where they will evaluate the energy efficiency of your home.

Step 3: Shop For Green-approved Windows and Doors

The pre-retrofit evaluation will leave you with a few recommended home upgrade options. Review these recommendations and decide what to proceed with based on your budget and renovation plans.

Step 4: Post-Retrofit Evaluation 

Once your home improvement has been made you can book a post-retrofit evaluation. At the scheduled appointment, the advisor will confirm which retrofits were undertaken and provide an estimate of the grant amount you may be eligible for.

Step 5: Request Your Grant 

After your post-retrofit appointment, upload any receipts and documents as proof at the Canada Greener Homes online portal or mail them. At this point, you can also request your reimbursement. Homeowners can expect to receive their reimbursement within a month after their energy-efficient upgrades are certified. The process involves submitting a post-retrofit application through their window and door installation supplier.
